[ Rattle Records / CD ]

Release Date: Friday 15 July 2022

Unfathomed Waters is a collection of collaborative works by Peter Liley and Jack Woodbury. Composed between 2020 and 2022, the album draws inspiration from H.P. Lovecraft's short story The Temple.

Compositionally, the pieces employ ambient textures, electroacoustic noise, saxophone, choral vocals, and glitch. At times calm, at others tense and agitated, these materials are woven together to explore The Temple's themes of isolation, longing, awe, and fear. Ultimately, this music seeks to capture a sense of the story's wonder alongside its lurking horror.

Jack is a Wellington-based composer and audio engineer. His compositional work focuses on juxtaposing noise and glitch textures against ambient materials. In 2020, Jack released "inst.19-20" on Rattle, a collection of works composed for audio-visual installations. His work has been presented in the UK, USA, Australia, and New Zealand.

Peter is a Wellington-based composer and performer (saxophone, voice). He is best known for his experimental approach to composition and performance on the saxophone, though he also works regularly as a classical chamber player and singer. Peter's compositions have been played in Australia, Europe and New Zealand, and he has toured extensively in New Zealand and abroad.
