Schönbrunn Palace is one of Austria's top tourist destinations, representing the highlight for countless visitors to Vienna. And in the past 30 years, people amongst the expectant throngs of visitors from at home and abroad have often been heard commenting that it was seeing a performance of the musical Elisabeth that inspired them to come in search of the splendour of the old Habsburg Empire and trace the steps of the beautiful, enigmatic Empress of Austria. For a lot of tour groups from the Far East, this can even be their main motive for visiting Austria. This is just one example of the success that the musical by dream team Michael Kunze and Sylvester Levay has enjoyed since its 1992 premiere at the Theater an der Wien. To date, Elisabeth has been performed in ten languages and in 14 countries from Scandinavia to China, and with a global audience of around 12 million it is far and away the most successful German-language musical ever.
