Born in Texas in 1926, Noble Ray Price was heading for a career in veterinary medicine when he was side-tracked into a musical career. Helping out on his father's farm and happily singing around the livestock he took to performing at local events in the area. This would lead to spots on local radio stations and from there his musical career began to take a familiar turn as he started to perform in more shows until he was signed to the small Bullet label where his first single Jealous Lies unfortunately failed to make much impression. Luck, as often happens, would play a part in his story when he wrote a song for his pal Lefty Frizzell and briefly became a room-mate with Hank Williams, and in fact took over managing his band when the great star tragically died in 1953. However, it was his wonderfully wide-ranging baritone voice that would be the key to his becoming a bona fide country music star as you will witness when you hear these sides. His other claim to county music immortality was his innovation of propelling the accepted country 2/4 beat to one of 4/4, known as the "Ray Price beat" which would go on to greatly increase the popularity of country music. Hits such as Release Me (yes that Release Me!), Crazy Arms and Heartaches By The Number and many more would follow. Ray Price was inducted into the Country Music Hall Of Fame in 1996 and was still performing into his eighties. He would sadly pass away in 2013 at the fine old age of 87 years in his home state of Texas.
