Massive Attack
Protection

[ Virgin Records / CD ]

Release Date: Wednesday 25 May 1994

After a 3-year hiatus, this 2nd release for the Bristol boys sealed their fate as icons of modern youth culture in the nineties.

"This 2nd release from the lads from Bristol could never have compared to their stunning debut. However, certain key tracks were still able to seal their fate as icons of modern youth culture in the nineties... and rightly so.

The opening salvo of the title cut "Protection", and "Karmakoma" feature Tracey Thorn (Shara Nelson's inspired replacement) and Tricky respectively. Tricky's other main piece on 'Protection' is another highlight of the album called "Eurochild".

Although there are some lesser moments on offer here, other guest artists like long time collaborator Nellee Hooper, dance legend Craig Armstrong, and the gifted singer Nicolette keep things interesting enough. If people did feel a little disappointed with 'Protection' (the talents of Horace Andy are needlessly wasted on the likes of 'Light My Fire') then it's only because Massive Attack got it so RIGHT on their first album, 'Blue Lines'.

So, if you liked their debut, you'll more than likely dig this, because it's basically more of the same... just don't expect that earth-shattering exuberance you felt the first time round."
