Heartfelt, honest and an essential record. Genre-defying music

Beck's music draws from hip-hop, folk, experimental rock, psychedelia, pop, and rock & roll, recycling everything into a colourful, messy, and wilfully diverse brand of post-modern rock, filled with warped, satiric imagery and clumsy poetry.

Beck's music is undeniable - he is a startlingly original artist who always creates distinctive albums and his new album isn't any different.

Songs frequently morph from one genre to another, seemingly unrelated genre - bursts of noise give way to country songs with hip-hop beats, easy listening melodies transform into a weird fusion of pop, jazz, and cinematic strings; it's genre-defying music that refuses to see boundaries.

Internationally the crirics are hailing 'Sea Change' as an inspirational offering - "heartfelt, honest and an essential record"

"Beck's previous album ('Midnite Vultures') was an enjoyable foray into Prince-style funk. 'Sea Change' finds him in a much more sombre mood. Apparently a 'break-up' album, the songs on 'Sea Change' are permeated with a melancholic sweetness as Beck reflects upon love and loss.

Does this make it a difficult album to listen to? On the contrary, his return to the relatively stripped down indie-folk he last explored on 1998's outstanding 'Mutations' album allows his growing strengths as a songwriter to shine.

His craft here is more delicate than on many of his previous albums. Light string arrangements subtly set the mood on the gorgeous track "Lonesome Tears" and the reflective nature of his lyrics are served well by the sheer beauty of the album's sound. Recording 'Sea Change' may have been an act of catharsis, but in doing so Beck has produced his finest album thus far and a true masterpiece."
