Paul Liebrandt is one of the most talented and controversial chefs in the food world. So prodigious is his talent that New York Times food critic, William Grimes, once likened Paul to "a pianist who seems to have found a couple of dozen extra keys". Liebrandt is the youngest chef to have received three stars from the N.Y.T. He was 24 at the time.

However, shortly after this victory over the critics, Liebrandt fell apart. Sick of the stifling control of restaurant owners, he threw in his haute cuisine chef's hat and took a job at a second-class bistro, still determined to share his culinary vision with its clientele. But in post-G.F.C. New York, the desire for comfort food meant that Liebrandt's signature creations went largely ignored, with the chef resigning himself to flipping burgers for an uncaring public. This is the story of how the determined Liebrandt endeavored to climb his way back up to the top of the food chain.
